I know, it happens to me all of the time. You’re going along just fine-eating well, drinking your water, thinking abundantly, not worrying about what other people are doing - basically running fearlessly toward the upgraded version of yourself when BAM something
in the road causes you to stumble and next thing you know you’re on that old familiar path that leads you to a dead end.
Maybe you wake up feeling anxious and fearful when you know you need to stay present in the moment but darn it if your mind won’t let you. Maybe you ate 3 chili dogs and chased them down with a beer. Maybe you were supposed to get up and walk but it’s just so dark and chilly on the other side of that door.
Listen, it’s ok. It’s not only normal but it’s necessary. This is what putting the work in looks like scientifically. The brain can rewire itself to form new neural pathways, a process called neuroplasticity. This ability allows people to learn new skills, improve existing ones, and adapt to change but your old ways are going to try and steer you back because that’s what is familiar and comfortable… but it won’t be forever.
So, how do we keep ourselves in forward motion when the old ways creep in? Well… you simply start paying attention to when you’re off track. Acknowledge that this is normal and what is happening and redirect your attention to the present and remind yourself of your goals.
It might look something like this:
“I can’t believe I ate so bad this weekend and didn’t even walk. I am also freaking out because work has been slow and the first of the month is coming”
Redirect- “I am learning a new way of life. Today I will get back on track and prepare a healthy meal and walk around the block. I am abundant in all things and I believe that I have enough”
Shifting your mind from guilt, worry and shame to understanding, mindfulness and self compassion will get your back on track and get you closer and closer to your new of thinking feeling familiar and comfortable. It takes 3-9 months to build new neural pathways so set your GPS and keep redirecting yourself back to your goals until your new ways are your new normal! Yay!
